BRUSSELS - The European Union on Monday called for an anti-terror alliance with Arab countries to boost cooperation and information-sharing in the wake of deadly attacks and arrests across Europe. EU foreign policy chief Federica Mogherini said Monday that "we need an alliance. We need to strengthen our way of cooperating together." 

EUROPE-ANTI-ISLAM RALLIES

DRESDEN, Germany - PEGIDA, a German group protesting what it calls "the Islamization of the West" is vowing that it won't be silenced after its weekly rally was canceled following an alleged terrorist threat against one of its organizers.

PARIS - President Francois Hollande, once the most unpopular French leader in his country's modern history, is getting a major boost in popularity following his response to the terror attacks that shook the nation. However, a majority of respondents in a poll still disapprove of his performance. 

UKRAINE

DONETSK, Ukraine - Russian-backed rebels in eastern Ukraine claimed Monday that they have seized control of the Donetsk airport after days of intense fighting. Ukrainian officials have not confirmed a retreat.

FRANKFURT, Germany - The fundamental flaws in the creation of the euro haunt the currency zone. And the political forces at work at the euro's birth - such as Germany's unwillingness to share finances with poorer countries - still block change. 

BRITAIN-GLOBAL WEALTH

LONDON - Oxfam International says the richest 1 percent of the population will own more than half the world's wealth by 2016. In a report released Monday as the World Economic Forum begins in Davos, Switzerland, Oxfam says the world's richest people saw their share of global wealth jump to 48 percent last year from 44 percent in 2009. 

TURKEY-POLITICS

ANKARA, Turkey - Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has convened a Cabinet meeting for the first time, a move that is raising concerns among critics that he is pushing ahead to expand the powers of the largely ceremonial presidency. Erdogan has dominated politics for the past decade as prime minister and was elected president in August. He has set his sights on turning Turkey's parliamentary system into a presidential system, giving the head of state executive powers. 

GREECE-ANCIENT-GRAVE

ATHENS, Greece - Greek officials say human bones found in a resplendent ancient tomb excavated last year in northern Greece belong to at least five individuals, including an elderly woman and a baby. The high-profile excavation at ancient Amphipolis uncovered a large, vaulted tomb decorated with marble statues of sphinxes and young women, as well as a remarkable mosaic pavement. 

SWEDEN-OBIT-WALLENBERG

STOCKHOLM - Peter Wallenberg, the former head of Sweden's most powerful financial dynasty, has died. He was 88. A statement from the family foundation says Wallenberg died Monday at his home on the island of Varmdo, outside Stockholm.
