An Indian woman residing in San Gwann has requested compensation, arguing that she was misdiagnosed twice by two local hospitals - St James Hospital and Mater Dei.

On 8 October, Lojin Brijieh visited St James Hospital complaining of back pain. Following an x-ray and a medical examination, she was prescribed painkillers and sent home. Five days later, on 13 October, Brijieh visited Mater Dei suffering the same persistent back pain. After being examined by four doctors within the Emergency Ward, she was told she had a muscle spasm and was again sent home.

On 14 October she was admitted to Mater Dei's Intensive Care Unit by ambulance after she lost consciousness. She was operated upon twice and was in danger of dying after she suffered a septic shock.

The two hospitals in question have been asked to explain what led to her diagnosis, as until today, she was not been given an explanation. She is claiming that she suffered damages as a result of the hospitals’ negligence.

Today aged 20, Brijieh is still recovering and is set to undergo additional surgery.  The court heard that the situation could have been avoided given the right diagnoses and medication.

Lawyer Stefano Filletti, on behalf of his client, made the compensation request to the director of Saint James (Capua) Hospital Ltd, the Superintendent of Mater Dei Hospital, and the Minister of Health.
