Government to invest €11.5 million for restoration of Cottonera, current works in Birgu

Between 2013 and 2016 the government would have invested a total of €11.5 million for restoration of the Cottonera. Vittorosia is set to benefit from restoration works, valued at €2 million euro.

This morning, parliamentary secretary Stefan Bontempo visited the ongoing works at the Auberge de France by Vittorosia’s local council. Mayor John Boxall said that the ongoing works were only made possible by the financial support of the government, adding that nowadays, Birgu is sought by both locals and touritsts. A new cafeteria as well as public toilets are set to be opened in the upcoming weeks. Meanwhile, a number of cultural events and visits have been organized in the locality.

Stefan Bontempo said the government will continue assisting the local councils to develop innovative projects in their localities. He said that in the past years, Birgu’s local council has strived to ensure the locality serves as an excelled destination for tourists, while making it a home for residents. As a result, the value of property in Vittorosia has gone up significantly.  

 

The parliamentary secretary urged other local councils to follow suit and come up with projects for the benefit of the locality.
