People will be given option not to declare their sex under new gender identity bill

People will be given the option of not declaring their sex on identification documents if amendments to the Gender Identity Bill are approved in Parliament.

Speaking in Parliament, Equal Opportunities Minister Helena Dalli said that the Bill will give people the choice whether to declare their sex or gender identity on identification documents by the introduction of an X marker

People will also be allowed to legally change their sex without undergoing gender reassignment surgery

Dr Dalli said the law will not be granting special rights to certain sections of society, rather it will ensure that everyone has access to the same rights.

Last November, The Malta Independent raised a number of potential loopholes in the initial Bill, chief among which was the concern that the Bill does not require children to be given an indentity when they are born.
