The government is set to invest six million euro in a new five-storey complex that will serve as a performance centre for artists as well as hosting 20 workshops for carnival enthusiasts.

Culture Minister Owen Bonnici said today that the new centre will bring artists from different spheres together in order for the arts to flourish and artists to “cross-pollinate.”

Dr Bonnici said planning applications for the project are going to be filed immediately and the aim is to have the complex completed by 2018.

An amphitheatre with a 200-seat capacity will provide rehearsal space for artists and bands, as well as giving them the opportunity to showcase their talent to the public

Dr Bonnici said artists are not being provided “with a garage but a whole complex,” in reference to singer William Mangion’s efforts to find a suitable space for bands to practice.

He said that apart from Mr Mangion’s role in identifying the site, he will also assist the Malta Arts Council in how best to move forward with the project.

Asked whether carnival enthusiasts and artists will be made to pay rent for their use of the complex, Dr Bonnici said discussions are under way with all the stakeholders.

Questioned about the relocation of the market from Merchants’ Street to Ordnance Street, Dr Bonnici said artists will be given the opportunity to display their wares in Ordnance Street when the commercial market dismantles.

Pressed on whether he agrees with the move, he said it is positive as it will give an opportunity for artists to set up an artisan market.

If possible, he said he agrees that the commercial market does not spill over onto the other side of Republic Street by the new Parliament building.
