Former commissioner John Dalli says libel cases against The Times to continue

Wednesday, 25 February 2015, 14:32 Last update: about 10 years ago

Former European Commissioner and former Minister John Dalli this morning said that the criminal and civil libel suits against The Times of Malta have been deposited and procedures will follow as established by law.

Mr Dalli was contacted in the wake of the apology made this morning on the front page of The Times following an article published yesterday which linked Mr Dalli to Swiss Leaks.

The suits have been deposited, Mr Dalli said.

On Tuesday, Mr Dalli said in a statement he was suing The Times of Malta over what he said was a “malicious report” published with the title “No suspension for Gatt and Dalli over Swiss accounts”.

In the statement, Mr Dalli said that with “their malicious reporting that has been going on for years”, The Times included him in the Swiss Leaks story by giving the impression that he was part of a list of people having such an account.

He also urged the government to get a copy of the list of Maltese account holders in Swiss banks to avoid blackmail and manipulation as happened in this case.
