Marlene Farrugia: Women should speak up more for their rights

Monday, 2 March 2015, 21:29 Last update: about 10 years ago

Speaking on the Adjournment of Parliament this evening and on the occasion of Women's Day which is celebrated on 8 March, Marlene Farrugia, MP said women must speak up especially in cases where the laws have been laid down by males.

She pointed at some areas where women are at a disadvantage, such as in cases of family violence the male perpetrator of the violence more often than not gets to remain in the house and it is the woman who has to relocate.

There are also many cases where the Family Court delays the proceedings.

The world does not seem prepared to accept that women may have something to say: those who do so are suspected. Women should support those women who speak out.

Women should speak out too about issues such as the environment.

Even Parliament as it is, is not women-friendly at all. Its times are not family-friendly and it expects its MPs to be part-timers.
