The University of Malta is a partner with the Parliamentary Secretariat for the Rights of Persons with Disability and Active Ageing on a project funded under the European Social Fund entitled Capacity Building in Care for the Elderly and Persons with Disability.

As part of this project the Faculty for Social Wellbeing will be organising the training of nurses working in care homes for older people and in the community. Training programmes aim to develop an advanced understanding of multidisciplinary perspectives on ageing and dementia studies, and will make a valuable contribution to the development of dementia care knowledge and practice among nurses in Malta. Participants in the training programmes will be empowered to fulfill their highest potential in the social and health care of older persons with dementia - thus, ensuring that older persons with dementia live a dignified and meaningful life that respects their citizenship rights. The number of staff that will be trained by the end of the project will be of around 340.

Parliamentary Secretary for Rights of Persons with Disability and Active Ageing, Justyne Caruana said that training is crucial for quality care for the elderly and persons with disability to be given in different facilities around Malta. She claimed that training aims to reach the latest standards and measures in order for our services to become top notch.

Dr Caruana mentioned that training will also feature foreign lecturers.

The Faculty for Social Wellbeing will also be organising the training of staff working within the Disability field including KNPD Services officers in Communication Skills and Techniques and the training of KNPD and Agenzija Sapport Managers and Assistant Managers in topics dealing with empowerment, ownership, effective participation and assisting staff in dealing with difficult situations; and training for Agenzija Sapport Front Line Staff and Support workers in topics which include Choice and Opportunities; Person-Centred Approaches, Professional Boundaries; Care Practices and Communication Skills and Techniques.  The number of staff that will be trained by the end of the project will be of around 320.

The University of Malta and the Parliamentary Secretariat for the Rights of Persons with Disability and Active Ageing have signed a Memorandum of Understanding.
