Junior College student wins best translation

Thursday, 5 March 2015, 11:10 Last update: about 10 years ago

Junior College student, Sephora Francalanza, one of the 28 Sixth form students, one from each member state, won the annual translation contest JuvenesTrans-latores organised by the European Commission's Directorate-General for Translation with over 3,000 participants from 740 schools across the continent.

The participants had to translate texts on the topic of European identity. All winners chose to translate into their strongest language. Sephora translated from English into Maltese.

The budding translators will travel to Brussels in April to receive their prizes from European Commission vice-president Kristalina Georgieva.

Over the years, the contest has encouraged some of the participants to continue studying languages at university level and to become translators.

This is the third time that the Maltese winner hails from the Junior College. Claudine Borg from the French Department prepared the students for the competition.
