The MaltMUN Society is an independent, internationally-minded organization committed to securing close ties among the most diverse of its members, investing in their personal development and nurturing leadership skills, whilst embracing the spirit of the United Nations throughout.
To mark the second anniversary of its creation, the MaltMUN Society sent a delegation of fourteen students hailing from highly diverse courses to participate in the 16th edition of the London International Model United Nations held at Imperial College. Model United Nations is an academic simulation of the United Nations that aims to educate participants about current events, topics in international relations, diplomacy and the United Nations agenda.
Members of the Maltese delegation represented countries as diverse as France, New Zealand, Somalia, the Democratic People's Republic of Korea and Sri Lanka. This year a number of delegates were also selected to participate in some of the most highly competitive and prestigious simulations of LIMUN: with Saman Bugeja and Claire Caruana assuming the roles of Counsel and Judge respectively in the International Court of Justice, Charlene Gauci representing New Zealand in the Security Council and Hillary Briffa participating in the Crisis Committee.
During the Closing Ceremony awards are given to delegates that epitomise the spirit of LIMUN. Award winners succeed in communicating their objectives, cooperating with other delegates, seeking a consensus, and representing the policy of their country accurately, yet not in detriment of the committee. In this year's edition of LIMUN, the Maltese delegates succeeded in winning five awards, these being the award for Best Position Paper won by Claire Caruana participating in the ICJ, two Honourable Mentions going to Bernice Saliba participating in UNESCO and Sephora Gauci in UNICEF, and the coveted, prestigious award of Distinguished Delegate won by MaltMUN's very own Secretary General, Clara Chetcuti in UNRWA and International Officer, Hillary Briffa in the Crisis Committee - a new record for the Malta Model United Nations Society.
The MaltMUN Society said it is highly satisfied with the results achieved at this year's edition of LIMUN - which demonstrate the Society's dedication to maintain a high level of debate, leadership skills, and positive portrayal of the Maltese people internationally.
