Judge Caruana Curran, who had a long prestigious career on the bench, has passed away.

Aside from a long career on the bench, Judge Caruana Curran was one of the founders of Din l-Art Helwa and promoted environmental awareness in Malta.

He was born in Valletta on 11 June 1918 and was appointed to the bench at age 45 in 1963. As a lawyer, he specialised in criminal law and quickly distinguished himself in this field. He was highly respected among Malta's legal community and retired in 1983.

During his tenure as a judge, he sat on all divisions of the court and also sat on the court of appeal and the constitutional court.

Following retirement, he conducted an inquiry into the ill-treatment or prisoners at the Corradino correctional facility. He had later drawn up new prison regulations that came into force in 1995.

He was described as the 'islands bastion of liberty' by President Emeritus Ugo Mifsud Bonnici.
