Over 3,000 people visited the Marsa Power Station this weekend to discover the history and technology of the electricity generation plants in operation for the last 61 years.

Enemalta workers welcomed visitors to guided tours of the 1953 Marsa Power Station, which is expected to be fully decommissioned soon. It was last chance for the public to visit the power station before it is dismantled. Visitors learned about the power station's development and of vintage photos from Enemalta's archives were also exhibited.

Visitors also participated in the Marsa Power Station photography competition and €500 worth of photographic equipment vouchers will be awarded for the best photos submitted.

At the beginning of 2014, in accordance to policy direction given by the Ministry for Energy and Health, Enemalta began planning the decommissioning and dismantling of the Marsa Power Station. The company decommissioned the older parts of the station during the summer of the same year and immediately coordinated the necessary works to start dismantling them. Some of the decommissioned units were still in use until 2013. The decommissioning and dismantling of the power station will continue in several stages.
