Tourist market attracts huge French liqueur brand Giffard to Malta

Wednesday, 25 March 2015, 21:02 Last update: about 10 years ago

Cocktails will soon start tasting better around Malta and Gozo thanks to Giffard, a French brand of real-fruit liqueurs and syrups being newly imported by P. Cutajar & Co. Ltd.

Giffard was launched in Malta earlier this month with two sessions for bartenders and traders who got a chance to explore the different flavours and aromas across the Giffard range.

Set up in 1885, Giffard is a fourth generation family-run company famous for Menthe-Pastille.

The pure, clear and refined white mint liqueur was invented when pharmacists Emile Giffard was researching about the digestive and refreshing properties of mint. His invention led him to change his pharmacy into a distillery which is still in his family today.

Brand ambassador Pauline Quigis said the Giffard family were very excited to be working closely with P. Cutajar & Co. Ltd.

"We love to work with other family businesses like P. Cutajar & Co. Ltd. It gives us great confidence because they know the market really well," she said.

Ms Quigis added: "We were attracted to Malta because there's a huge tourism industry here that creates a good demand for our products. The difference with Giffard products compared to our competitors is that we control all the production, from the food to the bottling, so we know we're working with real fruit not just aromas. You can taste the difference."

Giffard is not sold in shops but to establishments and professionals in the trade.

P. Cutajar CEO Denis Zammit Cutajar said: "As we celebrate our 150th anniversary, it's great to partner up with a family company like ours that is coincidentally also celebrating its anniversary this year: 130 years. We're confident that we can continue growing successfully together in this partnership."
