St Julian's: Easing traffic, air and noise pollution, public transport, a priority

Saturday, 28 March 2015, 16:03 Last update: about 11 years ago

Introducing Julio Caruana, Alternattiva Demokratika candidate for the local council elections in St Julian's,  AD Chairperson, Prof. Arnold Cassola, said: "St. Julian's and Paceville are a major tourist area, with a high concentration of traffic, and consequently air and noise pollution.  It is therefore imperative that serious measures are taken in order to help reduce pollution and ease the traffic gridlock.  Byelaws to prevent contractors from occupying pavements with their cranes for a long time, should also be enforced.  The present law with regards to the decibels allowed in commercial establishments should be enforced to ensure that residents get a decent amount of necessary rest at night".

Julio Caruana, AD candidate for St Julian's, said: "Apart from increasing the area of open spaces in St. Julian's, in collaboration with Transport Malta, we need to ensure  that the water in the popular bays of Balluta and Spinola should remain clean batheable water and not be polluted by the many boats that just drop anchor in the bay and spend even whole weekends occupying the bay.  A system for the collection of run off water should be devised to prevent this from depositing all sorts of waste into the sea.

"As an elected councillor, I will work for the implementation of an efficient collection of electronic waste and of used clothes, on the model of the system successfully implemented in H'Attard.  As regards domestic waste, more user friendly literature on the different types and times of waste collection should be distributed amongst residents.

"With a concentration of so many tourists living in the area, the public transport system should be reinforced, especially more so in the Spring - Summer period, when the number of buses on the 12, 13 route should be significantly increased.  It is also imperative that more ticket vending machines are installed along the whole St. Julian's - Sliema sea front.

"Ensuring that the St. Julian's local library is made more accessible to users will also be a priority for me as an elected councillor".
