Voting has now officially closed and the first ballot boxes have started to arrive at the counting hall in Naxxar.

Referendum boxes will start being opened as soon as they arrive at the counting hall and sorting of the votes will start at 9am tomorrow.  Unofficial results are expected within one hour of sorting but the official result will be issued later.

Earlier on, the Electoral Commission said that around 34% of eligible voters voted in the national referendum on spring hunting by 2pm, with the lowest estimated turnout registered in the second, third and 12thdistrict.

31% of eligible voters cast their vote in the local council elections taking place across 34 different localities, by 2pm.

Ballot boxes of the local council elections will start being opened early on Saturday 18 April, with the full result expected Sunday 19 at around noon.

The voting process went smoothly, except for some minor incidents of people being approached as they were going to vote. Police approached campaigners asking them to stop and they complied.
