Hunters take over

Sunday, 26 April 2015, 09:00 Last update: about 10 years ago

Wednesday morning (22 April) was a beautiful sunny day, so at about 7.30 I took my two dogs for their usual walk in the wild area of Mellieha adjacent to Santa Maria Estate, known, I believe, as Kortin.

I was accosted by no less than three 'Rambo' hunters who politely but firmly told me to clear off. They were standing in stone enclaves situated no more than a couple of feet away from a path regularly used by ramblers and dog walkers.

My day was totally ruined and my thoughts turned angrily to the politicians who literally handed the referendum result to the hunters.

It is pretty obvious that the rights of the common citizen mean nothing to our politicians, of either side, when weighed against any voting advantages that might be gained by a given political stance.

Is it too much to ask 'our' government and 'our' Opposition to allow us to enjoy what's left of our dwindling environment without risk to life or limb?

It is now up to us to fight for our environment and to make the politicians realise that we mean business.
