Last year, tourist expenditure around the world increased by €36 billion, while in Europe it increased by €13 billion, an average increase of 3.6%, according to the World Tourism Barometer. In 2014, Malta registered an increase when compared to the previous year.

According to the National Statistics Office, tourist expenditure reached €1.5 billion, an increase of €88 million in funds for the Maltese economy.

Tourism Minister Edward Zammit Lewis welcomed the positive results, saying that despite the fact that prices for products have gone down, expenditure has increased, meaning that the sector is able to stimulate economic growth, encourage exportation and create employment.

He stressed that such results confirms that Malta is at the forefront when compared to other European and non-European countries.

This, he said, confirms that the government’s political vision is headed in the right direction.

The government is committed to keep up such positive results and to work to attract tourists that are willing to spend to Malta.
