A 34-year-old Maltese national has been found dead in a Bangkok hotel, with Thai media reporting that a heroin overdose is believed to have caused his death.

The man, who has been identified as Daniel Borg, was staying at the Aloft Sukhumvit Hotel in the Watthana district of the Thai capital.

He was discovered by a housekeeper, Suphannee Sarapee, who went to check on him yesterday evening after he failed to check out from the hotel as scheduled.

After her knocking on the door provoked no response, she opened the door with a spare key and found his body lying on a bed.

Mr Borg is believed to have been dead for a couple of days before his body was discovered.

The police did not find any signs of foul play, but half a gram of heroin was found near his bed.

Mr Borg's body was sent to the Chulalongkorn Hospital for an autopsy. His death is suspected to have been the result of a heart failure brought about by a heroin overdose.
