A mechanic who has a "funds mismanagement" problem was remanded in custody over an alleged string of thefts from vehicles, and for having broken into an apartment.

Joseph Portelli, 51, born in Australia and residing in Birzebbuga - pleaded not guilty to the charges. His defence explained that Portelli has a funds mismanagement problem and keeping him in custody will only exacerbate his finance problems since he won't be able to work as a result. The lawyer asked the court to release her client from police custody.

The prosecuting team argued that the accused can engage in similar crimes once he is back out and the fact that he had been found guilty of similar crimes in the past does not make him a credible person.

The police explained that a few months ago, this same court gave Portelli a chance after he was found guilty of similar charges but Portelli blew his chance and did it again. Therefore the magistrate remanded him in custody.

Abigail Bugeja was his legal aid while Police Inspector Roderick Agius prosecuted.

Magistrate Marsanne Farrugia presided over the case.
