Updated: Realtor refuses to remove huge sign which can be viewed from ferry entering Gozo port

The realtor who was requested by MEPA to remove a huge sign advertising a block of apartments in Gozo is refusing to do so and is now claiming that the planning authority was wrong to demand its removal.

The advert is displayed on the same block of apartments in Mgarr, Gozo, but is so big that it can be viewed from the ferry entering port, and has been described as an eyesore by many. MEPA enforcement officers asked the realtor to remove it by 25 April, but it is still there today.

Contacted on the number shown on the advert by The Malta Independent, a shareholder of Mgarr Developments, owners of the apartment, replied with “So what?” when asked why the sign is still being displayed.  Asked to provide reasons, the shareholder, Mark Grech, first refused to comment before changing his mind and saying: “MEPA is wrong. Developers have permission for hording, and the sign will remain where it is,” he said.

The apartments are being sold by a well-renowned real estate agent, and prices go up to a staggering maximum of €1.5million.

The photos on the agency’s website show the magnificent view which can be seen from the luxurious apartments’ galleries. But this view, in its reverse, that is for people approaching the harbour from the sea, is ruined by this outrageous sign.

Perhaps the large scale banner can be seen as a desperate attempt to sell the apartments.

According to MEPA’s regulations, commercial advertisements may be displayed without permission for a period of not more than 28 days, provided they are not illuminated and not larger than 20 square metres.
