ITALY-MIGRANTS

ROME — A baby girl was born aboard a rescue boat in the Mediterranean Sea as Italian Coast Guard and Navy ships bring migrants by the thousands to the country's southern ports. In the three-day period ending Sunday, 6,771 survivors were rescued at sea.

EUROPE-GREECE BAILOUT

BRUSSELS — Greece made progress with its creditors over the weekend on how to stave off bankruptcy, officials said Monday, despite complaints in Athens that the International Monetary Fund is pushing the cash-strapped country too hard over labor reforms.

FRANCE-FAR RIGHT FEUD

PARIS — The man who for nearly four decades built France's far-right National Front into a political force may now be on the fast track to disgrace. The party's executive bureau was to meet Monday to decide possible sanctions against Jean-Marie Le Pen over his anti-Semitic remarks, amid a high-stakes family feud. His daughter Marine Le Pen — the current party leader — and other rising stars within the party want to shut him up.

SWEDEN-FAILING-SCHOOLS

STOCKHOLM — An international report says Sweden needs to urgently address the declining performance of its schools, a growing embarrassment for the Scandinavian welfare state. Swedes are used to seeing their nation rank near the top in international surveys on everything from quality of life to economic competitiveness.

TURKEY-DRUNK-CRANE-OPERATOR

ISTANBUL — Officials say a crane operator in Turkey has died after drawing fire while driving through the barriers of a military base. State-run Anadolu Agency says soldiers at the Dalaman Aerodrome Command in western Turkey shot at the tires of the crane Sunday, causing it to fall into a ditch. Two soldiers were wounded.

UKRAINE

KIEV, Ukraine — Ukraine's army says two soldiers have died in renewed bouts of fighting in the east, where skirmishes between government and separatist forces are increasing and intensifying despite a February peace deal.
