Bringing cultures together for Europe Day

Monday, 11 May 2015, 16:07 Last update: about 10 years ago

On the occasion of Europe Day, 45 students following the International Baccalaureate at St Edward's College and 30 French students who are in first year sixth form of the European section from the Lycée Le Rebours in Paris met together for a workshop in Birgu. This group composed of 12 nationalities met to discuss social responsibility as it is a main topic of concern for Europe.

This collaboration project was planned months in advance for the French part by Mrs Marie Jeanne Spiteri, the Chargée de Mission à l'International of Lycée Le Rebours, is based in the centre of Paris, and locally by Mrs Dominique Inglott, Head of St Edward's Sixth form. Both schools promote similar values and felt that this opportunity widened their perspectives.

For the workshop, the students were divided into four groups and they had to discuss their point of view relative to topics including the natural environment, poverty, immigration and the future generations.

Once the groups came to their conclusions, some rapporteurs for each topic made a presentation to the plenary and brought out the main points that were mentioned. The students showed passion in getting their message across to the others and there was a common accord on the outcome.

The time spent together by these youths in Malta allowed them not only to get to know each other both on a personal and professional level, but also to share about their respective cultures, understanding their different realities and at the same time being together in unity as Europeans.
