Turkey says one killed in attack on Turkish ship off Libyan coast

Associated Press Monday, 11 May 2015, 13:31 Last update: about 10 years ago

Turkey's Foreign Ministry says a Turkish freighter ship was attacked in international waters while approaching the Libyan port of Tobruk. It says the attack killed a Turkish crew member and wounded several others.

The ministry said the Cook Islands-flagged Turkish ship, Tuna-1, was first attacked by artillery fire some 20 kilometers (13 miles) off Tobruk on Sunday. It says the ship came under aerial fire as it tried to leave the area. It says the ship carried construction material from Spain.

The ministry condemned the attack Monday and said Turkey reserved its right to seek compensation.

Libya effectively split in two when forces allied to the internationally recognized government failed to drive rival militias out of Tripoli, leaving it confined to the cities of Tobruk and Bayda.
