Law governing the Commissioner for the Elderly in the works - PS Justyne Caruana

Sunday, 24 May 2015, 15:39 Last update: about 10 years ago

Parliamentary Secretary for Active Aging Justyne Caruana has stressed that the Commissioner for the Elderly will have a specific legal act to govern him, adding that the Act has already been presented in Parliament.

The law will also have the ability to enforce standards and establish an independent authority to enforce the standards in both public and private elderly homes.

The Parliamentary Secretary thanked the Active Aging Foundation for their work with the Health Care Standards Directorate in order for these standards being desifned. The material has now been optimised following a consultation process.

The rights of the elderly always remain a priority for this government , however one must understand that this laborious exercise takes time. She reminded people that this government worked to introduce new laws to end abuse on the elderly and introduced new practices for elderly services to improve their quality of life.
