The situation at Zonqor point has caused quite a stir, with members of the public taking to social media to voice their opinions over the proposed university development on land situated outside the development zone.

Three Facebook groups, called “Zonqor Point is not for sale”, “No university in Zonqor point” and “SaveZonqorpoint” have been created, gathering a total of nearly 10,000 likes.

In addition, Front Harsien ODZ, the Movement launched last Saturday has set up a Facebook page which has gathered over 3,000 likes on its own.  

Most people do not seem to be against the construction of the proposed university, but rather against the proposal to construct it on ODZ land.  “Development is not always progress. Protect the limited parts of undeveloped coastline left in Malta,” one person posts.

“The Environment is important for the country and for our future generation, nobody needs a university to be built on the seafront, UNLESS the third parties are hiding behind the university and then build high class apartment to be sold to foreigners,” another questions.

Ever since the Spring Hunting referendum, issues relating to the environment have been at the forefront of discussion, with large portions of the population seemingly no longer willing to accept or allow development on untouched land.

The movement on this particular issue has seen both hunters and those who voted against spring hunting come together and argue against this ODZ development.

The PN have announced themselves against the area designated, and so have some Labour MPs, including Whip Godfrey Farrugia and Marlene Farrugia.
