TRAFFICKED BRIDES

LONDON — Klara Balogova was 18, penniless and heavily pregnant when she rode thousands of miles from Slovakia to England to marry a man she had never met. He wanted her European identity card so he could gain the right to live and work in Europe. Each year, dozens of women like Balogova from the poorer corners of eastern Europe are lured to the West for sham marriages. The men pay large sums because they want to live, work or claim benefits more easily; the brokers, often organized criminal gangs, take most or all of the profits. 

IRELAND-RYANAIR

DUBLIN — Europe's leading budget airline, Ryanair, has beaten forecasts again, reporting full-year net profits of 867 million euros ($949 million), 66 percent higher than the year before. Sales rose 12 percent to 5.65 billion euros ($6.2 billion) chiefly because of relentless route expansion combined with the impact of the airline's 2014 decision to improve customer service. 

RUSSIA-IRAN

MOSCOW — Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov says work is under way to fulfill Russia's supply of advanced air-defense missiles to Iran, but that no start for the delivery has been set.

GREECE-MIGRANTS

ATHENS, Greece — Greek authorities in the eastern Aegean Sea have picked up more than 300 people who entered the country illegally in small craft from Turkey, raising the total of arrivals over the past two days to nearly 1,200. After Italy, financially crippled Greece is the main destination for refugees — mostly from war-ravaged Syria — and economic migrants seeking a better life in the European Union. About 30,000 have arrived this year. 

TURKEY-ATTACK

ANKARA, Turkey — An official says an opposition party candidate has been hospitalized after being shot in the knee while campaigning for Turkey's general elections on June 7. Tuesday's assault was the third violent attack on parties or politicians contesting the polls in the southern city of Adana. But Gov. Mustafa Buyuk said the attack against Elif Dogan Turkmen — a lawyer running for the main opposition Republican People's Party — was not politically motivated, and appeared to be carried out by her former client.

AUSTRIA-PEOPLE SMUGGLING

VIENNA — Austrian police have detained three suspects for allegedly smuggling people onto flights bound for the United States or Britain. State Prosecutor Friedrich Koehl says investigations focus on at least 11 cases between last fall and February. 

APPLE-DESIGN

LONDON — Apple innovator Jonathan Ive says he's been promoted to the company's chief design officer, making him one of the most powerful people in the world's most valuable company. As a lead designer with the company, Ive helped conceive the looks of products like the iPod, iPad and Apple Watch. 

PORTUGAL-TRANSPORT STRIKES

LISBON, Portugal — Portuguese labor groups are vowing to keep up their fight against the government's privatization plans for public transport, as Lisbon subway staff walked off the job for the 43rd time in four years. Workers at the Lisbon bus company Carris and national railroad company Comboios de Portugal, both state-owned, have also staged dozens of strikes since debt-heavy Portugal needed a 78 billion euro ($85 billion) bailout in 2011.
