34 students from 28 countries were awarded the Degree of Master of Laws (LL.M.) in International Maritime Law during the annual Graduation Ceremony of the International Maritime Law Institute (IMLI) held at the Aula Magna, University of Malta, Valletta Campus.

In addition, four students were awarded an Advanced Diploma in International Maritime Law and one student was awarded the Degree of Magister Juris (M.Jur.) in International Maritime Law.

Minister for Home Affairs and National Security Carmelo Abela presented the Malta Government Prize for Best Performance in the Law of the Sea examination. In his address, Minister Abela remarked that IMLI is a showcase of the Government's belief of Malta's potential to be renowned as an international centre of excellence in education especially in areas of specialization. "Today the graduation of students from various countries shows that we are once again experiencing a successful story of an International Institute based locally which has become a world recognized centre for training, in this case in the area of international maritime law."

"The subject of Maritime Affairs has always been given its deserved priority on a national level". Minister Abela took this occasion to speak about the value of education which IMLI provides.

"Due to Malta's geographic position, maritime security is likewise an area of priority", said Carmelo Abela. Minister Abela remarked how nowadays, due to the international developing scenarios in the areas of migration and defence, it is important that maritime industry is discussed in parallel with maritime security. Moreover, Minister Abela highlighted the Government's work, especially on a European forum, towards the enhancement of maritime security and safety through information sharing between Member States.

The Minister for Home Affairs and National Security congratulated the newly graduates for their efforts in broadening their horizon away from their homes, so upon their return, all graduates will be equipped with the necessary legal expertise. "IMLI graduates hold positions of great responsibility and authority throughout the maritime world and I am confident that you will do the same," concluded Minister Abela.
