Speaker Anglu Farrugia this evening ruled that the remark by Ian Borg was unacceptable, and warned MPs to watch their expressions. He said that ever since the MPs moved to the new parliamentary building, and therefore being visually streamed live online, they are feeling the need to ‘raise temperatures’ during debates or question time.
Last week, Parliamentary Secretary Ian Borg remarked that that he "did not orgasm on speculation.’ Dr Borg’s apology was later published in The Malta Independent.
The speaker said that Dr Borg’s remark will be removed from the transcript.
He said that should the need arise, the speaker may ask other MPs to vote to leave the sessions. An MP may be suspended for a week, two weeks or even one month.
He said that according to regulations, if the speaker is not 100% of the words uttered, he should set the manner aside, and decide in a later sitting. Mr Farrugia added that offensive expressions in parliament are not accepted and are degrading.
In the past months, the parliamentary session was suspended more than once after debates degenerated into shouting matches.
