Teen party organiser and DJ Joel Caruana,24, has been found not guilty of slandering a police officer through a Facebook post.

A post was put up on the Facebook page 'Joel C Events and Marketing,' stating that a party meant to be held on 12 December 2013 had been cancelled because the police said the venue was too small.

The post claimed that the police had said the party could take place outside of Paceville. Superintendent Carmelo Bartolo objected to this, saying no permits for such a party had been received, and he objected to the presence of Joel Caruana as a DJ due to his previous convictions for corrupting minors.

Mr Caruana was convicted in 2013 over charges of defilement when he was pictured cupping the breast of a 14-year-old girl at one of his parties. Two years earlier, in 2010 he was sentenced to a 10-month prison term suspended for two years, for engaging in sexual acts with a 13-year-old girl.

Mr Bartolo told the court that the Facebook post let to an internal police investigation to ascertain whether he was helping Mr Caruana organise the party. Mr Caruana denied putting up the post in question, saying he has no control over the Facebook page in question.

Magistrate Consuelo Scerri Herrera thew out the case, saying the police had failed to investigate and prove who runs the Facebook page.
