Jesmond Mizzi Financial Advisors Limited has announced its agreement to sponsor the Ghajnsielem Redcoats.
During the presentation of the sponsorship held last month at the new offices of the company in Hamrun, company CEO, Jesmond Mizzi, commented that his company is happy to assist up-and-coming clubs and is therefore enhancing its association with the Ghajnsielem Redcoats. The company extended its sponsorship for another season to support the club in its efforts to promote sports in Gozo especially among girls and young women.
Joseph Scicluna, president of the Ghajnsielem Redcoats, thanked Mr Mizzi and his company for their generous support. Mr Scicluna reported that the Redcoats are gradually evolving from a baseball and softball club that participates in the competitions organised by the Malta Baseball and Softball Association (MABS) into a sports club.
Initiatives that were introduced during the 2014/15 season such as the Active Start - Young Multisport Athletes programme and the Basketball Fundamentals programme turned out to be very successful with over 25 boys and girls participating in each of these two programmes respectively.
Baseball and softball continued to be the core sports of the club with the softball team winning the MABS Youth Softball Minor League whereas the baseball team ended the season as runners-up in the MABS Youth Baseball Major League. In autumn, the 45 minors and youth players registered with the club participated in a four-team Softball Division that was followed by a double elimination tournament to determine the winner. In the spring the minors played in the Instructional Baseball Series whereas the youths competed in the Baseball Championship Series.
The Redcoats also participated in a sports project in collaboration with the Education Department. Baseball sessions were held twice a week at the Gozo College Ghajnsielem Primary for students attending Kinder 1 through to Year 6. This was done in an effort to enhance the physical literacy of the students while at the same time to promote the sport and encourage further participants.
The Redcoats are expected to stay busy with programmes such as Kick Start (football), Base Hits (baseball), and First Hoops (basketball) for the younger members of the club. There will also be baseball and basketball back-to-basics sessions in an effort to help players to sharpen their fundamental sports skills in these two sports in preparation for the 2015/16 season.
