Opposition to present proposals on pensions reform by end of week - Paula Mifsud Bonnici

Tuesday, 28 July 2015, 19:28 Last update: about 10 years ago

The Nationalist Opposition will present its proposals on the pension reform by the end of the week, according to Social Policy spokesperson Paula Mifsud Bonnici. The PN, she said, has carried out a wide consultation exercise on the subject.

Many elderly people are finding it increasingly difficult to make ends meet and thus it is important that the country reaches a sustainable solution.

Dr Mifsud Bonnici met representatives of a number of youth and student organisations along with Matthew Agius, President of the PN’s youth section, the MZPN.

While many youths are not interested in the pension issue this is a matter that will affect them at the end of their working years, she said.

Mr Agius said the MZPN also held internal discussions about the proposed reform and, while this would not lead to economic shocks, youths should also find out how the reform would affect them. Youths also pay Social Security so the state should ensure that they are paid an adequate and sustainable pension when they reach the retirement age.
