Event to serve as showcase of collaborative efforts between NGOs - organisers

Duncan Barry Monday, 24 August 2015, 09:38 Last update: about 10 years ago

Inspire, RA1SE Foundation, and the Cystic Fibrosis Trust will be benefitting from the funds collected from a mega event to be held at SmartCity's Laguna Walk on 5 September at 8 p.m. The organisers of the event have roped in five top fashion houses for the 'One 4 All, All 4 One' event which "promises to be an unforgettable experience".

The event won't only include a fashion show but will be an entire spectacle. An 11-piece band - Versatile - will perform on the night while a number of deejays, including DJ Toby and ones from party promoters Sunglasses at Night, will also be performing on the night. Those attending will be treated to an open bar (excluding spirits) and food.

Organisers Pat Tabone and Nadine Busuttil said the idea is for the funds raised to be split up among various charities not just one.

"It all happened when we met at a party at the Golf Club one time and decided to go for a big-scale charity event, the end goal being to see as many NGOs as possible benefitting from the event," Mrs Busuttil said.
Ms Tabone explained that while the three entities have very different focus areas, they share a common goal: building momentum and economies of scale through collaborative efforts.

"Malta's social economy is a highly fragmented one with over 1,000 NGOs all relying on public contributions to aid their causes.

"Pulling the same rope in this sector therefore becomes a priority and this event has been instigated to be the showcase of such collaborative endeavours," Mrs Tabone highlighted.

The main representatives of the three NGOs are the president of Inspire Nathan Farrugia, founder of RA1SE Julian Azzopardi, and the driving force behind the Cystic Fibrosis Trust (Malta) Josette Falzon. The money collected by Ms Falzon goes towards research in the UK. She is considered to be the top fund-raiser for this cause, also in the UK.

The fashion houses expected to participate in the event are Accessorize, Monsoon, Max Mara, Syl, and Massimo Duti. Around 17 male and female models are expected to model during the show. The fashion show has been left in the good hands of Carina Camilleri who is popular in the local fashion scene.

"What's great about this event is that many individuals and companies are approaching us out of their own free will to support this initiative. We have been overwhelmed by the support we have received," they said.
In fact, the Sliema Arts Festival event organisers have offered to donate the funds collected from an online auction to the three charitable organisations, the organisers said. The auction will run until the end of September. The Facebook page is Sliema Arts Festival 2016.

Record-breaking endurance athlete to raise funds as part of event through ultra marathon

As part of the One 4 All, All 4 One event, Inspire foundation president and founder and CEO of Ultimate Performance Nathan Farrugia will be following in the footsteps steps of Pheidippides, the first ultra marathon, to help raise funds for children in need.

Mr Farrugia is inviting others to join him on this journey to complete the world's longest non-stop ultramarathon, raising funds for charity in the build-up of the challenge.
"Whether you are a sponsor, or whether you want to volunteer as a fundraiser or indeed participate in the run-up events held locally," Mr Farrugia said.

Spartathlon is the ultimate in road ultra marathons; a historical race that retraces the steps of Phaedippides, the greek messenger who, in 490BC, ran the 246km road from Athens to Sparta to warn of the invading Persian army, and dropped dead after delivering the message.

His heroic and superhuman efforts are ingrained in the folklore of endurance feats in history that are now being emulated by some of the most die-hard of athletes from around the world.
Since 1982, a handful of ultra runners have repeated this feat annually by running the 246km distance. The goal is to cover the distance in under 36hrs, or be pulled from the race.

Only half that start ever make it to the end and with warm weather, this percentage drops to 35%. Mr Farrugia has been accepted to enter this iconic race after sending his curriculum vitae to the organisers for an invite to take part. He had to cover the minimum requirements of running 100 miles in under 24 hours which he did last year at the Berlin ultra, covering the 163 kilometres distance in 19 hours  and  the half, finishing 37th in a strong field.
He has participated in over 50 marathons and ultra marathons, as well as some of the toughest multi-stage races and triathlons on the planet, and has raised hundreds of thousands of euros for charity though his challenges and the crews and sponsors that support him.

The main sponsors of the event are Island Caterers, SmartCity, Roseberry, Tower, GS Superstore, and Sliema Arts Festival. Demajo Wines and Spirits - Veuve Cliquot will be sponsoring the fashion show.

Inspire Foundation
Inspire believes that everyone has a right to equality and inclusion. Our mission is to try to help everyone with a disability achieve this. We do this by providing individuals and their families with educational, therapeutic and leisure services. We also advocate for inclusion, educate the general public, raise awareness among peers, and hold the best knowledge base on disability on the island.

The Inspire foundation is the result of a merger between Eden Foundation and Razzett Tal-Hbiberija - two leading charities that worked in the field of disability. The two organisations transferred all their resources and employees over to the new foundation, which now provides all the services in a one-stop-shop model avoiding duplication, enhancing service delivery and being more cost effective, leading to long term sustainability and added value.
Today, Inspire helps over 1,000 individuals with various disabilities ranging from Down Syndrome, Autism, Cerebral Palsy and others. We do this through many services and disability programmes that are offered at a highly subsidised rate or sometimes even for free.

Through dedicated staff and volunteers, we provide a free or heavily subsidised range of services and activities that help our beneficiaries living a high quality life, experience growth and a sense of achievement, and integrate into society, whatever their disability.

The organisation needs to raise more than €3 million a year to keep running smoothly but the incredible work that Inspire has achieved over the years would not have been possible were it not for the generosity of our supporters. We continue to be surprised by the innovation, enthusiasm and generosity shown by the general public, event organisers and the corporate community who loyally stand by us and support us financially on an annual basis.

Cystic Fibrosis Trust
The Cystic Fibrosis Trust believes that everyone living with CF deserves the highest level of care and real hope for the future. Over the last decade significant progress has been made in a number of areas to fight CF and the median predicted survival in the UK has increased to reflect this. However despite the opportunities there are still substantial challenges to be urgently addressed to make future hope a reality.
Living Longer, Living Better: Our vision for 2016 defines our ambition and focus of the next four years. The strategy defines the Trust's direction and focus across a number of areas with the overarching goal of ensuring that life affected by CF is not life limited by CF. In order to reach that goal, the Cystic Fibrosis Trust will focus its work over the next four years on four key areas:

  • Increasing length of life for those with CF
  • Improving quality of life for those with CF and their families
  • Increasing capacity of CF research and clinical care
  • Expanding awareness of CF and its impact on individuals and families

Investing in cutting-edge research: Even though life expectancy has increased, only half live to see their 40th birthday. Our patient registry and research programme helps us develop treatments that limit the impact of cystic fibrosis, and will one day find a treatment to beat it for good.

Driving up standards: medical developments mean this is no longer just a children's condition. We're committed to an ever-increasing quality of medical care from birth, to young adulthood and beyond.
Support for all: once it impacts on an individual, their family and carers, the effects are long-lasting and debilitating. It's our job to provide high quality, trusted information and advice, ensuring we assist those who need us the most.

Campaigning hard: We're lobbying decision-makers hard in the interests of our community - from inequalities in care, greater support to help us search for a cure and the organ transplants that many need to live longer, not die sooner.
RA1SE Foundation
RA1SE aims to raise awareness, interest, support and engagement in the work and world of voluntary organisations through direct participation in projects undertaken by itself and in collaboration with other established NGOs and individuals.
RA1SE intends to complement not reproduce what is already being done very well by other NGOs by focussing on collaborative working schedules, activities and practices.
This is done by attracting participation in other NGO events and Fundraising activities, identifying opportunities to support various causes directly and indirectly through the sourcing of the necessary resources required, including volunteering opportunities locally and abroad, as well as contributing to the literature on NGO work through communication strategies using social media.
