Malta will offer scholarships for research into climate change to students from developing countries

Environment Minister Leo Brincat today signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the University of Malta, to grant scholarships for Masters programmes relating to climate change research for students coming from low-income countries.

The schemes, the Minister said, form part of Malta's drive to combat climate change. 

The Minister explained that this is proof that, regardless of the country's limited resources, Malta is contributing to the fight against climate change. 

Minister Brincat said explained that international climate financing is the leading component, without which the upcoming global conference in Paris will not be a success.

He explained that his Ministry is pleased to be providing funds for this initiative, coordinated by the International EU Office at the University of Malta.

Government identified four key components for the research, revolving around sustainable development and the climate, water resource management, sustainability and generation of less dependent energy, maritime resources and legal structures for climate governance.

Minister Brincat called the priority given to climate change at the upcoming CHOGM a positive move. He also urged the private sector to consider
