Gozo University Group concerned over lack of accommodation for students in university area

Wednesday, 26 August 2015, 11:06 Last update: about 10 years ago

The Gozo University Group (GUG) said today that it was concerned about the fact, that a vast number of Gozitan students are finding it extremely difficult to find accommodation near the University area.

"This has become the norm of the day, since the demand for accommodation in Msida has increased, apartment owners are obtaining a higher rent, consequently less property is available for gozitan students, therefore those who are finding apartments are being asked to pay a higher rent than what is normally paid monthly.

It has become really difficult for students to find a suitable accommodation with reasonable prices. Every year, the rent of apartments is constantly increasing and considering the cost of living it is becoming much more difficult for gozitan students to cope with the current prices. The grant which we students receive is beneficial however it does not cover the expenses incurred monthly.

GUG is concerned about the current situation, and it fears that if no measures are taken in the near future the outcome will be problematic for Gozitan students studying in Malta. A strategic plan should be put in motion for accommodation in Msida under economical means that suit a student's budget."
