Sebastian Rode scored one goal and set up another as Bayern Munich moved provisionally top of the Bundesliga with a 3-0 win at promoted Darmstadt on Saturday.
Arturo Vidal fired in off the right post from 25 meters (yards) to open the scoring in the 20th minute. It proved to be the only goal scored in the first half across five concurrent games in the Bundesliga.
Rode set up Kingsley Coman in the 62nd for the French forward's first goal for Bayern on his first league start, and then sealed the result a minute later at the second attempt after his first hit the post.
Previously unbeaten Darmstadt, the side with the fewest resources in the league, went close to equalizing in the first half against the Bundesliga giants when Dominik Stroh-Engel shot straight at Manuel Neuer and Marcel Heller hit the side netting.
"The most normal thing in the world happened, Bayern won 3-0 in Darmstadt," said the home team's coach, Dirk Schuster.
Javi Martinez came on for Vidal in the 66th to return after a serious left knee injury from as far back as August 2014.
"I'm very happy for Javi, I missed him," Bayern coach Pep Guardiola said. "I'm also very satisfied with (Joshua) Kimmich and Rode. Both deserve more playing time."
Bayern moved three points clear of Borussia Dortmund with its fifth win from five games. Dortmund, which had been leading on goal difference after four wins, hosts Bayer Leverkusen on Sunday.
Anthony Modeste's 64th-minute header was enough for Cologne to defeat visiting Borussia Moenchengladbach 1-0 in the Rhine derby, condemning Lucien Favre's side to its fifth consecutive defeat to start the season.
"The players are having fun in the changing rooms. They know they've won an important game," Cologne coach Peter Stoeger said.
Elsewhere, Bas Dost scored twice for Wolfsburg to beat Hertha Berlin 2-0 and reclaim third place.
The Dutch striker scored in the 76th, five minutes after coming on as a substitute, and he sealed the result from the penalty spot in the 89th after Fabian Lustenberger was adjudged to have brought down Julian Draxler.
"I'm happy for the team that Bas Dost scored two goals. But the way he carried on the last three days like somebody took his toy away is not on. It was egotism," Wolfsburg coach Dieter Hecking said of Dost's annoyance to be starting on the bench.
Promoted Ingolstadt claimed an unlikely 1-0 win at Werder Bremen thanks to an injury-time penalty from Moritz Hartmann. Assani Lukimya conceded the spot kick as Ingolstadt moved fifth with its third consecutive away win.
There was still time for Bremen midfielder Philipp Bargfrede to earn a straight red card for a wild and dangerous tackle.
Hamburger SV's game with Eintracht Frankfurt ended scoreless as both sides consolidated their mid-table status.
"A very intensive game, also for the fans, even though there were no goals," Hamburg coach Bruno Labbadia said.
There was no late game Saturday with Europa League participants Dortmund, Schalke and Augsburg all playing on Sunday. Schalke was to visit Stuttgart and Augsburg was hosting Hannover.
