Immigration officers to ‘go slow’ as GWU orders industrial action over their conditions

Saturday, 3 October 2015, 15:47 Last update: about 10 years ago

The General Workers’ Union has ordered immigration officers to engage in industrial action after “the government failed to honour its commitment to discuss their work structure”.

The go slow strike is expected to start on Monday, 5 October.

In a statement, the GWU said that there is a dire need for a grade structure to be put in place since those involved were facing difficulties.

The union said that despite the commitment which had been made between the two sides, the government informed the GWU that it would not be negotiating the conditions of immigration officers before a court case which is currently being heard is suspended.

As from Monday, immigration booths will open half an hour late while immigration officers have been ordered not to wear their uniform, not to answer phone calls but to scrutinise passports all the same.
