President Marie Louise Coleiro Preca said this morning that, as from next year, only registered organisations will be eligible to receive funds from the Malta Community Chest Fund.
Mrs Coleiro Preca said this was being done to ensure transparency and fairness across the board.
Speaking at an event in San Anton Palace during which funds were distributed to 38 NGOs, the President said she had spoken to Archbishop Charles Scicluna, who backed her up completely. All church organisations will be registered by next year, she said.
Mrs Coleiro Preca said it was unfair that some NGOs went through the rigorous registration process while others that did not were eligible for funds the same as them. “The new system will ensure 200% transparency,” she said.
Mrs Coleiro Preca also said she was overwhelmed by the number of applications received for funding of social projects. This year 38 proposals were accepted out of a total of 92. Around 80 applications have come in for the second round of funding.
