Paqpaqli organiser breaks silence... to say he cannot comment on accident

Tuesday, 6 October 2015, 06:04 Last update: about 10 years ago

More than 24 hours after an accident that left five people in critical condition and 21 others injured, Paqpaqli ghall-Istrina organiser Tonio Darmanin has broken his silence to say that he cannot comment until the magisterial inquiry takes its due course.

Writing on Facebook, Mr Darmanin also says that his TV programme Paqpaq, which was due to be aired on Tuesday and which was to feature Sunday’s event, will not be broadcast.

This is his post in full:

"In line with instructions issued by the Office of the President, I cannot comment upon the events that took place yesterday until the magisterial enquiry takes its due course. I wish however to express my personal devastation that an event intended to bring joy and help to others took the turn it did. I express my sincere concern and solidarity with each injured person, their families and friends, and am thankful to those who genuinely share in the wish for everyone’s full recovery. I also thank all those involved in assisting the injured for their sterling work.

"As a sign of solidarity, tomorrow’s edition of the Paqpaq programme that was meant to feature Sunday’s event will not be broadcast."

People commenting below his post have expressed their solidarity.

On Sunday, a supercar crashed into the crowd of spectators during the Paqpaqli ghall-Istrina event in aid of charity.
