Queen mistakenly thinks Canadian PM is youngest of Commonwealth

Saturday, 28 November 2015, 10:18 Last update: about 9 years ago

Queen Elizabeth must not have been listening to Prime Minister Joseph Muscat in his CHOGM opening speech at the Mediterranean Conference Centre on Friday morning – when he said that he was the youngest head of government of the Commonwealth.

Later in the evening, in giving her toast at the end of the gala dinner, Her Majesty jokingly referred to Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau as being the youngest of the lot.

“Thank you, Mr Prime Minister of Canada, for making me feel so old”, the Queen said.

She is 89 years old, while Justin Trudeau  is less than half her age, at 43.

But Joseph Muscat is even younger, 41.

In her toast, the Queen said she was “grateful to be with you for the second Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting hosted by Malta, and I hope that this occasion will allow you to gather as friends and enjoy Malta's hospitality”.

In reply, the Canadia Prime Minister said in a tweet that the Queen is forever young and he was honoured to toast "your lifetime of service".
