Wasteserv’s initiative for the European Week for Waste Reduction 2015

Monday, 30 November 2015, 17:45 Last update: about 9 years ago

Wasteserv Malta coordinated the European Week for Waste Reduction for the 6th consecutive year. The EWWR, a European initiative, is held annually during the last week of November, this year falling between the 21st and the 29th November. The aim of the week is to encourage a wide range of audiences to come up with practical solutions and activities that help to reduce waste or increase recycling, and promote these actions amongst others.

Wasteserv eagerly participates yearly in support of such a great initiative on raising awareness for waste reduction, where each year a different thematic focus is selected at European level. Dematerialisation was the theme for 2015 - doing more with less, for example through reuse or repair of materials, or upcycling something old into something new.

In line with the selected theme, Wasteserv organised free educational and entertaining workshops on home DIY, clothes repair and creative upcycling. The workshops were held beside the flea markets in Mosta, Birgu, Nadur Gozo, Zurrieq and Birkirkara between the 23rd and 27th November and involved hands on experiences on repairing everyday goods that one would otherwise dispose of. "Our initiative during the European Week for Waste Reduction tied in perfectly with our vision of Creating Resources from Waste," said Wasteserv CEO, Tonio Montebello. "By repairing and upcycling instead of purchasing new products we can actively minimise the amount of waste thrown away and simultaneously give new life to these materials in a useful and creative way."

Those who attended the workshops had the unique and exciting opportunity to experience a jamming session with members from Tribali using their recycled instruments and learnt how to turn common waste items into musical instruments. Concluding the event on each day was a lottery draw announcing the winners for five FoodSaver appliances that were offered by V.J. Salomone Marketing Ltd in support of this educational campaign.

Wasteserv is not the only entity who participated in the EWWR. Across Malta and Gozo a record 120 actions took place and actively spread the word about the importance of waste reduction. The 120 actions were organised by a record breaking amount of over 85 entities including educational establishments, NGOs, businesses, individual citizens and public entities.
