Dwejra Azure Window fissure grows, collapse may be close

Sunday, 6 December 2015, 08:00 Last update: about 9 years ago

This photograph taken last week shows people walking above a glaring fissure in Gozo’s Azure Window in Dwejra. Geologists claim that it is only a question of time before the entire rock formation, a must-see Gozitan tourist attraction, collapses altogether. Fishermen these days never take their boats anywhere near the formation and one reported how he recently saw another chunk of rock fall into the sea.

Back in April 2012 a sizeable part of the seaward side of the iconic Azure Window collapsed. A deep fissure, like the one in this photograph, had long been visible on the side of the structure where the collapse took place.  But despite the obvious danger and the warning signs put up to stop people from walking across the arch, dozens do so every day.
