Christmas Tree made of recyclable material by MCAST students lit up at SmartCity Malta

Monday, 7 December 2015, 18:41 Last update: about 9 years ago

A ten metre high Christmas tree on a hexagonal base made of mild steel and recyclable materials by MCAST students from the Institute of Engineering & Transport and Electrical and Electronics has been lit up at SmartCity Malta. The tree has been colourfully decorated with plastic bottles and left over electrical material.

The planning of the tree goes back to the start of this academic year following a visit by the Foundation students to SmartCity Malta to familiarise themselves with the locality. This led to various brainstorming sessions following which a decision to create a tree made out of recyclable material was made. For this purpose the students collected a large supply of plastic bottles, left over electrical wires which were soldered to the required lengths and other recyclables.

Once the material was collected the assembly of the tree commenced and the students completely immersed themselves in the activity, boring holes in the mild steel frame of the structure under the guidance of their lecturers. They even contributed their ideas in resolving unforeseen problems arising from the kind of material being used. Strict health and safety procedures were meticulously adhered to especially in such an activity which brought with it a number of new practical experiences and challenges

The result of the students' input and contributions has resulted in an impressive tree which is today standing at SmartCity Malta.

Whilst congratulating the MCAST students for creating such an unique tree SmartCity Malta's CEO, Anthony Tabone said that "At SmartCity Malta we welcome innovative ideas especially if they promote sustainability and are environmentally friendly. We are proud to have partnered with MCAST students to have such a tree which the public can view and appreciate here at SmartCity Malta throughout the festive season.
