Long traffic jams leading up to Gozo ferry; traffic at a near stand-still

Saturday, 2 January 2016, 12:10 Last update: about 10 years ago

Roads leading up to the Gozo ferry are jam-packed with cars today, with traffic in some parts at a stand-still, and people getting out of their cars as they wait to cross the channel.

It seems that the good weather is attracting many visistors, who however are losing "hours" as they try to make it to the boat. People who contacted The Malta Independent say that they have been queing up since 8am.

The police, when contacted by this newsroom, said that there are no accidents or diversions, but they are informed of long traffic jams because of the huge number of people wanting to cross over.

Speaking with this newsroom, the Gozo Channel said they are currently operating on a shuttle system, where as soon as one ferry arrives from Gozo, embarkation starts and once the ship is full it leaves Cirkewwa immediately.

The road between Cirkewwa and the Red Tower in the opposite direction is being used as an emergency lane.

Drivers who took a chance and tried to make use of the peripheral roads were also caught up.

No doubt, this sudden rush to Gozo and the ensuing traffic queues will add fuel to the debate on a permanent link between the two islands.

The government is planning studies on the possibility of building a tunnel linking Malta to Gozo.
