Update (5): Five injured in head-on collision in St Andrew's; man grievously injured in Paola

Five persons were injured in a head-on collision in St Andrew's Road this morning, the police said.

The crash took place at 8am between a Honda Civic driven in the direction of St Paul's Bay by an 18-year-old youth resident of Mosta and a Volkswagen Golf driven in the opposite direction by a 20-year-old of Mosta.

There were two passengers in the Honda, two young women aged 20 and 17 from St Paul's Bay and Naxxar, and a 31-year-old woman from Mellieha was a passenger in the Golf.

The three people in the Honda all suffered grievous injuries, the police said, while the other two were treated for slight injuries.

The five were taken to hospital, as the road was closed at both ends.

In another accident, a motorbike rider was injured in a collision at Sa Maison.

In the third serious accident of the day, a 51-year-old man was seriously injured whehn the car he was driving crashed into another in Ninu Cremona Street, Paola.

The police said the Gharghur man was driving an Opel Astra when there was a collision with a BMW being driven by a 36-year-old man of Fgura.

The Gharghur man had to be freed from the vehicle by members of the Civil Protection Department. The other driver was unhurt.
