A three-storey car park is planned to be built underneath the Margaret Mortimer playground at Exiles, in Sliema, mayor Anthony Chircop told The Malta Independent.

Mr Chircop said that the Council shall be utilizing the Commute Parking Payment Scheme funds that Malta Environment and Planning Authority administer for this project. “The project entails the construction of a 3-storey underground car park, with the roof of the same car park becoming a new modern garden and playing field.” The garden will also include public conveniences.

“The plans are currently at MEPA screening stage, and an application for the devolution of the site has already been accepted by the Department of Local Government and passed on to Lands Department for further processing.

Mr Chircop also spoke of plans for embellishment of Independence Garden. He explained that “Phase One shall be the procurement and installation of energy efficient garden lanterns,” most probably with LED lighting. The project is being financed by “funds that had been previously saved from traffic contraventions.”
