The government is working hard to introduce several alternative mode of transport systems, and is currently researching the possibility of having Mass Transport System for Malta funded through the allocation of European Structureal Funds 2014-2020, said Transport Minister Joe Mizzi.
He said there were other projects in the pipeline including electric bicycle sharing, electric cars, urban circulars and mini buses running on gas.
Answering a parliamentary question put by government whip Godfrey Farrugia, he said that there have been several projects implemented or in the process of being implemented. Mr Mizzi said one of these was Transport on Demand for elderly persons.
He said that there was another project inthe pipeline to link Sliema to the historic centre of Valletta by sea. Another project, he said, was the installation of electrical charging points around Malta and Gozo to be inline with EU quota, as well as rapid charging stations.
The government is also planning the second phase of the Intelligent Transport Systems, which includes more electronic information boards, CCTV cameras on the roads and more infrastructure to assist in creating a more efficient public transport system. Another interesting development, he said, will be the creation of a hydrogen station so gas powered vehicles can fill up.
He also said that various measures to promote car sharing and car pooling are to be introduced. Answering another question by Dr Farrugia, Mr Mizzi said that the vehicles permitted to use the priority lane include electric powered ones, LPG powered ones, bicycles, public transport vehicles and vehicles with three or more people in them.
