Two Eritrean men accused of attacking fellow national remanded in custody

Two men from Eritrea today were remanded in custody after the court denied the defence’s request for bail.

22-year-old Mengstab Mulue Hayele and 20-year-old Hylom Teame Tesfaalem were arrainged in court and were accused of grievously injuring another man, Afewerki Teklesembet Yohannes.

The incident took place last Saturday in Marsa.

The Eritreans were also charged with being drunk in public and disturbing public peace.

Tesfaalem resides in Qawra and is currently unemployed while Hayele works as a cleaner and lives in Zebbug, Malta.

Defence lawyer Joe Ellis, who appeared for the accused, requested bail. The accused pleaded not guilty for the charges brought against them.

Magistrate Josette Demicoli denied request for bail as more people need to testify.

The prosecution was led by Inspector Priscilla Caruana Lee.
