Updated: Konrad Mizzi files libel suit against Fenech Adami; PN says Mizzi should resign

Wednesday, 9 March 2016, 13:07 Last update: about 11 years ago

Energy Minister Konrad Mizzi this morning filed a libel suit against Opposition deputy leader Beppe Fenech Adami for comments made during a television show on Tuesday.

In a statement, the minister said that Dr Fenech Adami was the first member of the PN to repeat, outside Parliament, comments made by PN leader Simon Busuttil which the minister deemed to be libellous.

The statement said that Dr Fenech Adami is now obliged to bring forward all evidence he has in court.

The DOI said that in spite of every challenge, Dr Fenech Adami has refused to allow a tax audit on the money he has deposited in banks and on his property.

Leader Simon Busuttil has so far not taken up the challenge to repeat the allegations he made in Parliament outside the House, where he does not enjoy parliamentary privilege.

On Monday, After being pressed to read out the allegations made by Opposition Leader Simon Busuttil in Parliament last week, Dr Fenech Adami read out extracts of the transcript, the part which implied that there is a "bag of money" stashed away in the trust owned by Minister Mizzi.

In a reaction, the Nationalist Party remarked that Dr Mizzi presented a libel case against the PN instead of celebrating the first year since he opened the new power station. It was a sarcastic comment in view of the fact that the power station that Dr Mizzi promised to construct within two years has not yet materialised.

The PN said it is looking forward to see Dr Mizzi, on oath, say why he chose to open a company in Panama after he became responsible for the country's biggest project.

Konrad Mizzi may open all the libel cases he can think of but he has ponly one choice - that to resign before he brings down the government with him.
