Maltese Folk Music Collection restoration

Monday, 21 March 2016, 13:43 Last update: about 9 years ago

National Archives of Malta in collaboration with the Friends of the National Archives of Malta (FNAM)

The Friends of the National Archives of Malta bought the Leli Muscat folk music collection in 2012 and started the digitization of 207 good quality tape reels and 27 reels which are cut and damaged.

Following discussions which Charles Farrugia, the national archivist and the FNAM had with the Minister for Education and Employment Evarist Bartolo, the Ministry is providing financial support for this project and thus FNAM is pleased to report that the project has resumed its momentum. Once all the reels are digitised the project progresses to another interesting phase.  Restoration would ensure that this contribution to our national memory is safeguarded from further deterioration.

Although the folk music is artistic, cultural and is part of our national identity, these recordings are valuable to our heritage and national patrimony. This form of oral history spans 20 years of cultural, social, anthropological history which help us understand village life in Malta between the 1960s and 1980s. Interesting themes that used to concern the society at the time include religion, marriage, family, parental love, friendship and hunting. The finalization of this project will bring to light more themes and a better organisation of the cultural heritage which could be shared with those interested and used for educational purposes and research.

The National Archives of Malta and the Friends of the National Archives are envisaging that the project will be finalised and launched in December. Meanwhile, donations by cheque payable to the Friends of the National Archives can be sent by post to: c/o National Archives of Malta, Main Office, Hospital Street, Rabat RBT 1043, Malta or during the book fair.

The Friends of the National Archives of Malta membership fees also contribute to the financing of this project.  Persons interested in becoming members may download the application form from www.fnamalta.org.
