Promise unfulfilled: Marsaxlokk council 'will start towing encumbering objects'

Monday, 28 March 2016, 12:47 Last update: about 9 years ago

The Labour-led Marsaxlokk council said today that it was holding discussions with the police to start towing trailers, boats and other encumbering objects left in front of garages, near the waterpolo pitch and other public spaces.

In a press conference, mayor Horace Gauci said warning notices will be stuck on the encumbering objects, giving the owners some time to remove them. If they are not, these objects will be towed.

These objects are aggravating the parking problem in the area, apart from being an inconvenience, the mayor said.

He noted that the council had issued a by-law to regulate these objects in 2004.

When the new council was elected in May last year, it held discussions with the police to start towing them. But the council had been contacted by the Justice Minister, who promised a permanent solution to the problem.

Eight months on, however, the council still does not know what the long term solution was.
